Definition of Midwife in Midwifery Nursing:

According to Bangladesh Nursing and Midwifery council (BNMC),”A midwife is a person who has successfully completed a midwifery education programme that is duly recognized in the country where it is located and that is based on the international confederation of Midwives (ICM). Essential competencies for basic midwifery practice and the framework of ICM Global standards for midwifery education; who has acquired the requisite qualifications to be registered and legally Licensed to practice midwifery and use tittle “Midwife”; and who demonstrates competency in the practice of midwifery”.

A midwife is a professional in midwifery, specializing in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, Or women’s sexual and reproductive health (including annual gynecological exams, family planning, menopausal care and others), and newborn care.

Who is a Nurse Midwife in Midwifery?

A registered nurse with additional training as a midwife who is certified to deliver infants and provide prenatal and postpartum care, newborn care, and some routine care (as gynecological exams) of women. A nurse who has skills in assisting women in the prenatal period and in childbirth, especially at home or in another nonhospital setting.

2. Service provider/practitioner:

They render quality maternal and newborn services to women and their babies: family planning, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) prevention, pregnancy, delivery and postpartum care for the mothers and newborn; referral problems during pregnancies or women with obstetric complications to the appropriate center.

3. Trainee:

They upgrades performance by evaluating one experience and achievement of set targets related to maternal and newborn services so that one can practice accountably and being able to train others.

4. Record keeper:

Record keeping is a key part of midwifery practice in hospital. It helps to make continuity of care easier and enabling identify problem in early stage.

5. Family planner:

They counsel people as a family planner. They provide all information about types of family planning methods and help couple to take the right decision.
