Difference Between Vasectomy and Tubectomy or Tubal Ligation
What is Vasectomy?
Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization or permanent contraception. During the procedure, the male vas deferens are severed and then tied or sealed in a manner so as to prevent sperm from entering into the ejaculate and thereby prevent fertilization. It is a permanent sterilization operation done in the male where a segment of vas deferens of both sides is resected & the cut ends are ligated.

Male sterilization or vasectomy being a comparatively simple operation can be performed even in primary health centers by trained doctors under local anesthesia.
Advantages and Disadvantages of Vasectomy and Tubectomy:
Advantage of Vasectomy:
It includes the following-

- Inexpensive in the long run,
- Relieves the female of the contraceptive buren,
- Highly acceptable procedure to most clients,
- The operation is done free of cost in Bangladesh,
- Quickly performed.
Disadvantages of Vasectomy:
It includes-
- It is permanent method,
- No protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs),
- Scrotal skin infection,
- Infection in genital tract,
- Protection for the male it provides only indirect protection from pregnancy for women.
Complication of Vasectomy:
Immediate:
- Wound infection,
- Bleeding,
- Hematoma,
- Scrotal abscess,
- Epididymitis.
Late:
- Sperm granuloma: caused by local accumulation of sperm.
Indications of Vasectomy:
It includes the following-
- Permanent ill health of the potential mother.
- Permanent ill health of the potential father.
- Diseases and genetic faults transmissible to the fetus.
- Previous obstetrical complications & operations.
- Family limitation.
- Population control.
What is Tubectomy or Tubal Ligation?
Ligation of fallopian tube is a permanent contraceptive method for female. Occlusion by segment of both the fallopian tubes is called tubectomy. It is the permanent sterilization procedures for the female. Occlusion of the fallopian tubes in some form is the underlying principle to achieve female sterilization.
Advantage of Tubectomy or Tubal Ligation:
It includes the following-
- Permanent,
- Highly effective,
- Cost effective when cost is spread out over time,
- Nothing to buy or remember,
- No significant long term side effects,
- Partner compliance not required,
- No interruption in lovemaking.
Disadvantage of Tubectomy or Tubal Ligation:
It includes-
- Procedures technically difficult,
- Expensive at the time performed,
- If failure, high probability of ectopic pregnancy,
- No protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs),
- May cause psychological problems,
- Requires hospitalization,
- Requires surgeon, operating room, Technical assistant, medication, surgical equipment.
Complication of Tubectomy or Tubal Ligation:
If client selection is appropriate and the procedure is, perfect then the complications will be minimum.
Immediate:
- Injury of the bladder and the intestine,
- Bleeding from the mesosalphinx,
- Rectus haematoma,
- Infection of the wound or the pelvic cavity.
Late:
- Incisional hernia,
- Ectopic pregnancy,
- Failure of tubectomy leading to pregnancy,
- Post-tubal ligation syndrome such as chronic pelvic pain and menstrual disturbances.
